  • Heals over one to two weeks

Things to know

What it involves

  • Gives a full-thickness sample
  • Stitches out in 5 to 14 days

Things to know

  • A small scar is likely

Excisional biopsy

The whole spot is removed with a margin of normal skin and the wound is closed with stitches. It both diagnoses and treats many lesions.

Results

Samples go to pathology, and results usually take about a week. Your GP will discuss them with you and any next steps.

  1. Tell your GP about blood thinners, allergies and any medical conditions. Eat as normal.

  2. A small injection numbs the area. You may feel a brief sting, then pressure rather than pain.

  3. Most biopsies and minor excisions take 10 to 30 minutes in our treatment room.

  4. You go home with a dressing, aftercare instructions and a follow-up for results or stitch removal.

Good to know.

More detail on common questions. Open a topic to read more.

The type of biopsy depends on the size, location and appearance of the spot, and what your GP needs to know.

Scars usually fade over 12 to 18 months. Sun protection on healing skin helps.

Some lesions, such as those on the face or larger spots, may be better treated by a dermatologist or surgeon.

Tell your GP about blood thinners and supplements such as fish oil. Do not stop them without advice.

Your GP receives the pathology report and discusses it with you, including any further treatment.

When to book.

Book an appointment if any of these apply to you.

  • Your GP has suggested a biopsy
  • A spot is changing and needs a closer look
  • You have a lump or cyst you would like removed
  • You need stitches removed after a procedure
  • You have questions about a pathology result
  • A wound from a procedure looks red or sore
